Garlic Mashed Potatoes

A close-up of fluffy mashed potatoes with flecks of red potato skin, seasoned with garlic and served in a rustic red bowl.

Yields: 6 servings Prep time: 10 minutes Cook time: 20 minutes Total time: 30 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 3 pounds red potatoes, peeled if desired (see note)

  • 4 tablespoons butter

  • 8 ounces sour cream

  • ½ cup whole milk

  • 1 tablespoon minced garlic

  • 1-2 teaspoons garlic powder, to taste

  • 1-2 teaspoons salt, to taste

  • ¼ teaspoon cracked black pepper, or 1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper

Instructions:

  1. Cook the Potatoes: Cut the potatoes into quarters. Place in a large pot and cover with water (water should come 1 inch above potatoes). Bring to a boil over high heat. Once boiling, reduce heat to medium-high and cook for 10-12 minutes, or until easily pierced with a fork. Drain the water and transfer potatoes to a large bowl.

  2. Combine Ingredients: In the same bowl, combine hot potatoes, butter, milk, sour cream, minced garlic, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.

  3. Mash: Use a potato masher or an electric hand mixer (my preferred method!) to combine ingredients. Mash until smooth but with a few lumps remaining. Avoid overmixing.

  4. Taste and Adjust: Taste and adjust seasonings with additional salt and pepper as needed.

  5. Serve: Serve immediately and enjoy!

Note: For a simpler prep, you can leave the skins on the potatoes. Scrub them well before cooking.

Tips:

  • For extra creaminess, use warm milk.

  • Add a pinch of nutmeg for extra flavor.

  • Garnish with fresh chives or parsley for a touch of color.

Praise to the Humble Potato: Garlic Mashed Potato Magic

The humble potato. Unsung hero of the culinary world. This unassuming tuber holds a special place in my heart, and frankly, in my kitchen. It's a blank canvas, a culinary chameleon, capable of transforming into countless delicious dishes. But today, we're celebrating its starchy glory in the form of Garlic Mashed Potatoes.

Oh, these mashed potatoes. They are the epitome of comfort food. Creamy, buttery, and infused with the savory magic of garlic, they have the power to transform any meal into a feast.

The process of making them is almost meditative. The gentle simmering of the potatoes, the satisfying thud of the masher as it transforms the cooked potatoes into a creamy cloud, the intoxicating aroma of garlic filling the air – it's pure culinary bliss.

And the possibilities for customization are endless! A pinch of nutmeg adds a touch of warmth, while a sprinkle of chives adds a vibrant touch of green. Serve them alongside roasted chicken, grilled steak, or even just a simple vegetable stir-fry, and you have a meal fit for a king (or at least, a very happy family).

For me, mashed potatoes are more than just a side dish. They're a reminder of simple pleasures, of the joy of cooking, and the comforting magic of a home-cooked meal.

So, the next time you're looking for a comforting and satisfying side dish, turn to the humble potato. You won't be disappointed.

P.S. Don't forget to savor each and every bite!
