Classic French Toast

A plate of fresh made, classic French toast topped with whipped cream and fresh strawberries.

Yields: 4 servings Prep Time: 20 minutes Cook Time: 15 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 4 large eggs, lightly beaten

  • 1/2 cup (120ml) whole milk

  • 1/2 cup (120ml) heavy whipping cream

  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract

  • 2 tablespoons (25g) granulated sugar

  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

  • 8-10 slices day-old Texas toast

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Griddle/Skillet: Preheat a griddle to medium heat, or place a skillet over medium heat. Spray with nonstick cooking spray.

  2. Combine Wet Ingredients: In a shallow baking dish, whisk together the eggs, whole milk, heavy whipping cream, and vanilla extract until fully combined.

  3. Combine Dry Ingredients: In a separate small bowl, whisk together the granulated sugar and ground cinnamon.

  4. Combine Wet and Dry: Add the cinnamon sugar mixture to the egg mixture and whisk until fully combined.

  5. Soak the Bread: Soak each slice of bread in the egg mixture for 30 seconds per side, allowing excess to drip off.

  6. Cook the French Toast: Place the soaked bread on the griddle/skillet and cook until golden brown on each side.

  7. Serve: Serve immediately with maple syrup, fresh fruit, or your preferred toppings.

Notes:

  • Best Served Fresh: This recipe is best enjoyed immediately after preparation.

  • Leftovers: Leftover French toast can be wrapped tightly and stored in the refrigerator for 1-2 days. Reheat before serving.

  • Milk Alternatives: Replace whole milk and heavy cream with 1 cup (240ml) of half-and-half.

  • Bread Options: Texas toast is preferred, but regular bread, French bread, challah, or brioche also work well. For thinner breads (like sandwich bread), reduce soaking time to 20 seconds per side.
